Follow me on a photo-journey at KLCC

I am a relatively frequent traveller to destinations covered by AirAsia. Love the excitement and adventure of my travels, including the local ones, and will always capture those fond memories with my camera. So, come take a peek through my lens for one of my favourite subjects—the Petronas Twin Towers—where I share interesting vantage points for the best photo opportunities.

Let’s begin our photo journey with Tune Hotel, located at the intersection of Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. I choose this location because it’s so conveniently located near major tourist and night entertainment spots, saving you time and expenses in moving around. Also, the hotel is in the vicinity of my favourite food outlet–Restaurant Mohd Yasseen that sells the best Nasi Kandar in town.

My usual order is chicken cooked in thick black sauce with steaming rice soaked in delicious fish curry and a special request of chicken and squid ‘sambal’ sauce to give it the extra sophisticated flavor.

Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC)

After a delicious lunch, I normally take a stroll or a taxi to the iconic Towers (whose image, by the way, is imprinted on Malaysia’s RM5.00 and RM50.00 currency notes).

The Towers are adjoined to each other with a Skybridge at mid-point of the buildings and is open to the public with an admission fee of only RM10! If you choose to visit the Observation Centre as well, it is packaged at RM40. You will see an amazing view of a large part of Kuala Lumpur skyline at the bridge.

From the ground, the night image of the Towers is simply spectacular. When viewed from different locations, the Towers seem to superimpose each other to look as one. Isn’t that amazing?

This picture is taken at the KLCC bus stop. The completely symmetrical design of the two towers tends to give different optical illusions, depending on where you are standing at various locations around KLCC. The perspective of this picture from ground level to the peak with the natural sky background really brings out the magnificence of this building.

KLCC Park--checking out vantage photo spots

A short walk from the KL Convention Centre is the KLCC Park, a luxurious open space to take a stroll, go for a jog, have a picnic or a photo shot to record your favourite view. There are sign boards to help you locate the best spots to take a picture but use them as a guide only to choose the best camera directions depending on the environment at that point of time.

This front view of the playground is a must-snap location for those with children. Your kids will treasure a picture of them having fun against the scenic view of a world landmark.

For this picture, I am mindful in applying the Rule of Thirds in featuring the main object (the Towers), rather than placing it dead-centre. This little tweak enhances the presence of the Towers bringing out some space dimensions.

For a shot of the Towers with a softer feel, climb onto the kid’s slide and you get a totally different view with some vegetation in the foreground. I recommend a manual setting with the appropriate F-stop to give you the depth of feel that brings a wider range of objects into focus. If you are using a point-and-shoot camera without manual setting, look for the Backlight setting.

A fish-eye view

Around the park, look out for metal balls that reflect your image with the Towers in the background. The picture captures a wide angle view with an interesting fish-eye effect.

The Jalan Tun Razak entrance to the KLCC car park is also a good spot where you can see both the KL Tower and the Twin Towers. The front perspective is usually a popular and convenient spot for tourists to take a picture on arrival. Personally, I prefer a view slightly from the right for the much desired space and height perspective. I mark this location to shoot my brother’s graduation photo shoot because the two landmarks somewhat lend a sense of celebration on his memorable day.

I encourage you to take some night shots as the bright lights make it an impressive subject. A tripod is not necessary as the surrounding environment is bright enough to take handheld shots.

Ampang Look-out Point

Another interesting place to capture unique shots of the Towers from afar is the Ampang Look-out Point. There are restaurants and cafes for you to enjoy a drink while you take time to decide on your best shot. It may take a bit of map reading to get there.

For this picture, I set my ISO light sensitive to 100 so that the bright city lights do not distort the background. For night shots, it is best to use a tripod to avoid blurry pictures.

This picture uses the same concept as the previous but the difference being the focusing area and the use of flash.

When I caught the sight of this man from afar smoking, it immediately crossed my mind he may be a gangster waiting to collect protection money. His eyebrows pointing upward does support my hunch. With fear, I approached him to ask for permission to take his picture. He turn out to be a friendly person and was willing to pose for pictures. It was amusing that when I was about to leave, he asked me for a couple of dollars.

Be Passionate

I skyped with Esther a while ago and she shared her plans for her future. We briefly touched on the need to be responsible for one's calling in whatever field. I asked her if her 10As in SPM has any correlation with performance in the university ; she shut me up by saying it's the passion. She reiterated that being an achiever in younger days does mean that a certain degree of discipline is instilled and it has a life long effect. So, in her course of study which includes plenty of sweat, tears and definitely discipline, she agrees that the discipline in her school days has a direct impact on her course. She also added that the passion acquired in one's older days will also mean achievement in one's vocation.

This evoked the memory of an ex-student who showed much passion in the film industry even at the tender age of 15.

Lee Sheng Wang, an Arts student showed a keen interest in the film industry and at 15 in 2006, was short-listed as the best 10 short film producer. He had a moving storyline which hit out on the need to be free from drugs to be happy in life.

When he finished his SPM, his parents saw me and asked for my 2 cents opinion on the vocation he should pursue. I quickly replied that it has to be an advertising vocation since his photography and filming passions are so obvious. So he enrolled himself into Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman and is now a final year student in the Kampar Campus.

In 2008, while yet a student, his passion in the film industry surfaced again as he was nominated as one of the 5 most versatile youths in the nation for the Short Film National Award. Amazing.

In recognition of his talent and contributions to the film industry, the government of Malaysia selected him as one of the representatives in the Asean Rok Independent Workshop in the Philippines in 2009.

Then he went on to grab the silver award for the Royal Commonwealth Vision Award in London in 2010. Passionate about filming and documentaries, he was not intimidated by challenges.

Sheng Wang though young, is able to work with professionals as he was given the privilege to do a short documentation on a ear operation in Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan a year ago. He shared that it was an eye opener for him and was glad that what he learnt in Science in school helped in understand the procedure better.

This fortunate lad has met many stars including Jackie Chan; to the envy of the young and old.

Passionate about photography, films, documentaries and advertising, his future looks bright and promising.

Before leaving for his final semester last month, he popped over to see me. His mother, Agnes is one passionate lady too. She is passionate that her sons are not left behind against all odds and challenges. She has indeed grabbed the title of the best and most devoted mother in town. So passion runs in the home right from daddy to mummy and his older sibling too.

Yes. Passion is the word. Ask all who are in the creativity line. It's passion that make them hit the nail on the spot. May good and exciting days prevail for all who are passionate in their calling.

May the best be with Sheng Wang too. Your Alma mater is proud of you.

The man with his wonderful smile, runs a bicycle repair shop in Kampar Old Town. The smile on his face is a pleasant welcome for customers and is the essence of this picture. This picture was taken when he was having a rest after having finished servicing his client. The cement floor shows the sustained damage from the dropping of tools over a long period of time. The tools on the floor and the wooden background adds a very vintage feel to this picture. I have personally not been that keen to capture black and white pictures. However having taken a few, I started to appreciated the difference in the way black and white pictures are able to communicate a message.

I was walking back with a group of friends participating in the Kampar World Wide PhotoWalk when I saw this lady pushing her bicycle. It was interesting seeing her tired and sweaty look. I learn that people in old town work till they are not able to do so. Do they enjoy working? Is it financial problem? What are the reasons?

I stopped for a moment to watch her activities. I thought she was collecting recycle items to sell. It turned out that she was delivering plastics bags to shop houses. In one of her deliveries to a grocery store I could see in her face she was about to faint. The owner of the shop quickly came out to hold her bike. Watching from a distance, I could see her telling the owner that she was fine. She held on to her bike, the owner took the plastic bag and she was off to her next destination.

Bazaar Ramadan is the food market that comes on during the month of Ramadan where entrepreneurs sell their special cuisine. This was a concept shot taken in Malacca. Concept shooting has taken my work to a whole new level in approaching photography. It takes a little more of my mind power to convey the message from my thoughts into my work. Sometimes getting a magnificent photograph is worth the extra effort and planning.

The main concept here is to create a picture that conveys the message that the car is comfortable to travel in both rural or urban areas, yet still keeping the coolness, elegance and classiness of a young sporty executive car. The lighting and picture tone must be able to give it the stylist pop in the body design. The location and timing was another important factor. This shot was taken at the golden hour using 100 percent natural lighting only. Three factors were considered in choosing the location;  

- Reflection details. If you zoom in closer for details, you can see the reflection of tall buildings and trees around the car front bumper. This was done without any superimposing.  

- Supporting element. The sandy ground blends with the style and tone of the picture. Further more it supports the main concept of a rural setting.  

- This was the only location that was able to give such natural lighting, reflection and tone.

It was a culture shock seeing people dressed like anima characters walking casually along the streets doing their daily routines. I thought some Cosplay event has just ended. I later learn that it is normal for teenagers to dressed like those in the picture where they still gets lots of attention from passers-by. The two guys walking behind this girl was definitely talking about her. They were also admiring he ass.

July 23 was my mom's birthday. Rather than celebrating her birthday in a high-end restaurant we attended a charity dinner to support the Jang Tana Thegchog Norbu Chosling Monastery. The organizers did a good job as the event was fun as well as entertaining with live band music, video show, comedy performance and auction of exquisite treasure pieces. The event raised a substantial amount of donations.

I have shared lot's of children pictures in Bon Odori 2011. In those pictures, the children was the main highlight. The performances were nice but it wasn't something that was unique when compared with the innocent faces of children dressed in Kimono. As time passes their looks will change. I am not even certain if I will be able to get another picture with the same feel in future. Isn't this the reason parents take up photography, to remember their innocent faces as they grow up.

For me the photo opportunity was just endless, meaningful and a wonderful experience. It was captivating taking their pictures. Unfortunately tomorrow will be my last blog post on Bon Odori 2011.

As I made my way out, on my way back home heading towards the gate, I saw this young boy playing with his ice cream cone. I went down on my knees and waited for a photo opportunity. I always believe that to get a good shot, you need to wait or work for it. I waited for about 5 minute to take this picture. I adjusted the flash, fire the shutter button and previewed before moving on.

This artistic shot was taken in Bon Odori 2011. As I walked toward the stores to get something to eat, this young boy caught my attention. I saw him running toward his parents. I set a slow shutter speed to create a motion blur. This would create a powerful visual impact showing that the subject is moving.

The girls chanted David's name and sang his Songs at Stadium Negara yesterday. I was impressed with David's sensational and powerful vocal performances that pumped up adrenaline of the crowd. The American Idol 2008 runner-up started his performance at 9pm, 1 hour later then the scheduled start time of the concert. His performance lasted for about 1 hour 30 minutes. David performed non stop supported by a 4 piece band including 4 songs where he played the electric piano. Personally, I would have liked him to have more interaction with the crowd. I believe over time he will improve on that and win more fans.

It was not a 'sold-out' concert as there were sections of empty seats. It was nice of the Organisers to allow audiences to move seats to better location when the concert started.

David sang all his popular tunes including, “Something About Love”, “Falling Stars”, “Elevator”, “Stompin” and ending his 1 hour 30 minute entertainment with “Crush”. David also sang songs from Gnarls Barkley (Crazy) and Bryan Adams (Heaven) that showcased his phenomenal voice that almost made him an American Idol winner.

There were lots of fans waiting near the stage, hoping David would come out to meet them after the end of his performance. They were all disappointed.

Japto Eto Odori

As I arrived at Bon Odori, I walked around the stadium to check the highlight of this event. I quickly discovered people were very friendly and they allowed their pictures to be taken. As long as they were wearing Kimono, traditional Japanese clothing, they seemed pleased to have their pictures taken. These boys caught my attention when they were eating. The boy on the left was sitting in a very cool position. He gave me the feel of a traditional Japanese boy enjoying his food with his wife.

As I was taking their pictures I could feel clicking shutter sounds from the left, right and behind me. When I was about to leave, I could see a group of photographers aka paparazzi, taking pictures of them too. Maybe they have just discovered that the boy is a celebrity?

I could feel the presence of paparazzis all around the stadium . Some of them used super long lens, camouflaging themselves in the bushes. I was wondering what pictures they were taking and how they would use those pictures.

This picture was taken in Bon Odori 2011. As I was walked toward the stage to watch the performance, this young girl caught my attention. Just looking at her eyes, I knew it would do a good picture. I tried to take her picture from a distance but realized I would not get the shot I wanted. I asked her guardian JANET GINIBUN for permission to take a shot and she gladly obliged even repositioning her daughter so that I was able to get the backdrop and the beautiful lighting behind her daughter.

It took a lot of effort to take this picture. I did a three hours climb through Kampar natural forest, in and out of water and ventured into new routes that led us to this wonderful location. This is an undiscovered site only known to a few adventurers and nearby residents, a fantastic subject matter for a photographer. The milky waterfall gives this picture a unique characteristic that awakes the imagination of the viewers. It was a mind blowing experience going on this trip.

I was doing a Photowalk around Kampar, Perak. I saw this lady going through the rubbish and thought it was a good photo opportunity. As we got closer to her I could feel that she was aware of our presence as she was trying to avoid us. My friends started to take pictures of her. She reacted angrily as she approached us. I could not remember the sequence of events but strangely, she started telling us her life story covering her children, work life, husband and lots of other personal issues. Before we left her, she asked if we could print her pictures and give it to her. Unfortunately I have not seen her since then. The pictures are with me and I am waiting for the day I can personally hand them over to her. This photo opportunity would not have been possible without the human communication.

I was taking the 70- 200mm f2.8 lens on a test. It was my first time using that lens. My first impression of the lens is that it is really heavy and solid lens. I’m if I hit somebody with the lens they would be in deep trouble. The focusing is really fast comparing with the 70- 200mm f4 lens. The picture quality is exceptional. I love the sharpness of the lens captured and the Bohkeh it produced. It is a mind blowing experience using this lens.

He was a waiting for his mother's return in a crowded street occupying his time looking at passers by. His dirty face showed that he had not been attended to for some time. His facial expressions and the neglected dirty look caught my attention.

It was raining heavily at Pusing, Perak before I took this picture. I was totally bored waiting for the rain to stop. When the rain did stop I took advantage of the fresh air by going for a walk around town. As I strolled along the old shop houses I had this photo opportunity. This dog was relaxing perhaps having a day dreaming session. Its moodiness and beautiful facial expression caught my eyes. I love this picture very much and I do not feel tired looking at the facial expression and often feel amused by it. Good picture opportunity can come when you least expect it.

My picture "Kreteks Karton" was published in Aperture magazine April issue. I am not really impressed with the size of the picture published as I do not think it does justice to the quality of the image captured. "Kreteks Karton" picture was taken in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The guards taking a break at Sultan's Palace, Karton, Yogyakarta. The younger guard was seen advising his older pal not to smoke but the latter does not seems to pay any attention to him. The old guard was lighting a Kretek cigarette that contains Eugenol from cloves widely believed to benefit those suffering from asthma. Kreteks are by far the most widely-smoked form of cigarettes in Indonesia, where about 90% of smokers usually smoke Kreteks.

This heavily bearded Korean man is not a usual face you will see in Seoul. He was a participant in the tea party ceremony held in the compound of Changdeokgung Palace. The expressions on his face was captured when I momentarily distracted him as I observed the rituals in his tea preparations.

The "Day Tea Rite" or "Special Tea Rite" has been practiced in Korea for over two thousand years. The first record of the Korean tea ceremony dated back to 661AD, when tea was served as an offering to the spirit of King Suro (www.lovethatkimchi.com).

This picture was taken on April 17, 2011 outside the palace of Jaipur's last ruler on the day of his funeral. I was standing near this local resident who was there to pay his last respect to Maharajah Brigadier Sawai Bhawani Singh, a highly regarded person. This resident and his friends were among the large crowd of local residents and tourist who have come to witness the occassion. He was quietly emotional and seems to be in deep thoughts. Definitely a loyal subject of the Maharajah.

India is considered one of the poorest democratic countries in the world. Being in India for the first time opened up my mind to the world of poverty. Their living condition is just unbearable by any standards. You could see many young children on the street begging for money. This reminds me of the brutal reality like in the movie Slum Dog Million Air.

This picture shows a boy with some kind of disability begging for money at the traffic light. He is walking walks up and down at the traffic light junction in the hope that people will wind down their window to drop money into his steel container.

Most of the visitors are adviced not to give MONEY to the beggar. It is heart breaking to see people who are clearly poor, clearly in need come to the window begging for a small handout.

"Light Lights Life" is a production concept and slogan used to promote
an electric supply company for providing electricity to light up the
consumer's life.

In a study, our client found that they are not connecting well enough
with the younger generation. With this information, we use a soft selling method
for this advertising campaign. The soft sell approach sends a
message in casual, fun, friendly manner and is less irritating for
the audience. This advertisement uses lots of light element like symbols
to enhance the message and to communicate that the consumers are
enjoying themselves. We use activities that our target audiences enjoy
doing. The production was executed using photographic and animation techniques, light graffiti and stock motion animation.

I was walking down Kampar old town sidewalk in a PhotoWalk activity on February 9, 2011. This man was sitting at the sidewalk grooming himself with a shaver as I walked down the sidewalk. He gave me the impression that he was a shy person looking at me and focusing quickly back on the personal activity a couple of times. I stood beside him ignoring his activity as if he was not there. As I stood beside him I could consciously feel that he was looking at me a if he wanted something. We had a non-verbal communication and I quickly took a couple of shots. I could see from his eyes that he was enjoying this moment.

So many people walk by the homeless trying not to notice and pretending not to see them. We should realise they have a mind, heart and soul too. Even wisdom can be heard if you take the time to hear.

（金宝21日讯）拉曼大学生们，现今的你是处于做梦的阶段，还是追求梦想的旅途上？

就如“敢于追求梦想”（Dare To Dream）顾问老师刘惠云所说，部分的大专生仍旧以浑浑噩噩，毫无生活目标状态度日子。

然而，他们，李政旺与许君仪，却已踏上实现梦想的路途上了。

李政旺与许君仪，受邀出席由辅导组同侪辅导小组举办的“敢于追求梦想”（Dare to Dream）分享会。

刘惠云指出，由于首要的两名学生都是拉大生当中的实际例子。因此由他们来分享，可以让学生们真实地感受到身边有很多敢于追求梦想，且积极将梦想实现的人。

李惠云：“年轻人要有梦想，并敢于追求梦想。”

获奖无数

李政旺，一名只有19岁的广告系2年级生，”凭一部教育纪录短片赢得今年“The Royal Commonwealth Vision Award”的银奖。他15岁那年，也在“Anugerah Filem Pendek 2006”中以“无毒品的幸福家庭”（Keluarga Bahagia Tanpa Dadah）取得最佳十大短片电影制作之一。

李政旺坚信“self-motivation”（自我激励）。

踏足芬兰

许君仪，即将毕业的新闻系3年级生，J-ON创办人之一。由中四起，欲成为一名记者的她，除了在马新社（BERNAMA）度过3个月的实习记者生涯，更曾前往芬兰参与限于新闻系学生及记者的“外国记者研讨会”（Foreign Correspondent Programme）。

追求梦想的过程中，许君仪将身边的人事物分门别类为“重要”和“仅要”。

为达梦想，不惜“抗战”

在实现梦想的旅途中，他们彼此都遇上许多荆棘，而最大的阻力是来自于家人。

在分享会上，许君仪坦言，一开始父母亲对于她的选择很不赞同，两位长者更是劝说她放弃。李政旺的父母亲则希望他以学业为重，兴趣为次。家人的不赞同，无形间也带给他们压力。

然而，与家人长期的“抗战”中，他们终取胜。许君仪努力地让父母亲了解到当一名记者，虽有一定的危险性，却可得到不同的知识和见识。

“在我从芬兰回来的机场上，看着父母亲笑得像个小孩般迎接我，那一刻，我知道他们终于接受了我的梦想。”许君仪如是表示。

投身于电影制作的李政旺，将一次又一次的得奖名单摊开给父母亲看，证明他在追梦的过程中，并没有忽略课业。李家父母由一开始的反对，变成他最大的支持。

从一开始的反对，到现在，兄长李盛洋和父母是李政旺追梦的最大支持者。

对于李政旺，努力追求梦想，最重要靠自身激励。“You Believe You Can Do It.”（你相信你是可以做到的）是他给予追求梦想者的名言。

而许君仪也相信家人的支持和鼓励，是她最大的动力。

国宝光良莅临

另一方面，“敢于追求梦想”分享会上亦邀请了重量级嘉宾 – 大马国宝光良。

光良追求梦想的过程，你被激励了吗？

“敢于追求梦想”副主席李珮嘉指出，邀请艺人前来分享会是刘惠云老师所提出的一个概念。“她曾在马华大厦三春礼堂看过李心洁的经验分享，因此有了分享会的雏形。”

刘惠云说，邀请艺人前来拉大分享经验是她的“梦想”，同时籍着李政旺和许君仪的分享，可激励拉大生敢去做梦且追求梦想。

Life is Choice

出道近十年的光良，坚信这“life is choice”，生命需要不断地做选择，并且留着后路给自己。

曾经梦想当科学家的他，却在10岁那年学习钢琴，而慢慢喜欢上音乐，开始了他对音乐梦想的旅途。

曾经失败很多次，亦有着成功的表现，然而，他却一直催眠着自己得失心不要太重。

从小胆小的他，从陪同妹妹参加钢琴班，再踏上演艺事业，再后来由演艺事业从低走到如今的成就。走过了许许多多的荆棘，慢慢地实现了他的音乐梦想。

光良的莅临，迎来拉大生的瞩目。

采访后记：

周星驰在电影《少林足球》里是这样说的，“做人如果冇梦想，咁同条咸鱼有咩分别呢？我心入面个团火系唔会熄嫁！”意味着做人如果没有梦想，就等同咸鱼。这句话后来成为最经典台词之一。

五月天的歌曲《咸鱼》是这样唱的，“我不愿一生晒太阳吹风，咸鱼也要有梦，有一天，做我的英雄，在我的天空”。

不要害怕告诉别人你的梦想，更不要害怕于实践。现在就重拾你丢弃已久的梦想，不做咸鱼，梦的旅程，今天就启程吧！

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) advertising student Lee Sheng Wang is a rising film-making star who got the world’s attention when his three-minute educational documentary film showing the entire process of cochlear implant surgery won the silver award at the 2010 Commonwealth Vision Awards held at the Commonwealth Club in London on 14 October 2010.

The competition, organised jointly by the Royal Commonwealth Society and the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association, is aimed at encouraging creative film-making on developmental themes, particularly relating to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), by young prospective film-makers in the Commonwealth. The theme for 2010 is ‘Science, Technology and Society’.

Lee was flown to London, courtesy of various sponsors, including Malaysia Airlines, National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) and the British High Commission in Malaysia, to receive his award at a high-profile Commonwealth Gala Awards Ceremony attended by senior diplomats, leaders of Commonwealth organisations and media figures, including the prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago. Lee received a certificate and a book from Gurinder Chandha, one of Britain’s most respected film-makers with a successful track record in directing films which are international box office successes.

The competition was judged by a distinguished panel of judges comprising former BBC news anchor Keshini Navaratnam, Academy Award-winning Atlantis Films founder Michael MacMillan, independent Australian filmmaker Charlotte George, Jennifer Sobol, who runs creative programmes at the Commonwealth Foundation, and Melanie Tankard, representing the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

On his award winning entry, Lee said he was inspired to choose cochlear implant surgery as his film topic because he wanted to send a message via the audio visual media to parents and the public that early intervention through medical processes could assist hearing-impaired children to lead a normal life.

“During my school days, my brother and I used to follow my mother, who was doing some voluntary work with the Day Care Psychiatric and the Pediatric Ward at Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM). I learnt that many young children with impairment could be remedied with early medical intervention. However, it is regrettable that many parents are not aware of the availability of such intervention. I had since set my heart to play my part in disseminating this information and reach out to large audience,” Lee said.

Lee took about two years to complete the documentary. The editing of materials, and composing of music and voice-over took up most of the time and he had to do all these in between his studies and other commitments.

Lee, who had shown much talent in film-making since the age of 15, said: “I just had this keen interest to want to do a film. I did a lot of reading and research and the more I learn and explore, the higher was my interest level. Self-learning was not easy and the intensity of my interest in this field was the motivating factor. I have to balance my time on hobby and my studies. In some ways, both are complementary. As I am pursuing a course in advertising at Utar, the knowledge gained in some of the subjects is relevant to film-making. At the same time, my extra reading and research reinforces some of the theories in the course of my studies.”

For the preparation and coordination of the filming, Lee said he did not face much difficulty.

“Our good relationship with the doctors and faculty members was critical in getting the first clearance to produce this documentary. In this regard, I would like to thank UKM Medical Centre director and dean Datuk Prof Dr Lokman Saim, otorhinolaryngology surgeon Assoc Prof Dr Goh Bee See, Department of Speech Sciences head Assoc Prof Dr Kartini Ahmad, and UKM Faculty of Allied Health Sciences Department of Audiology head Prof Dr Siti, who were all very supportive of this project. The parents of the patient were magnanimous and understanding in giving us the permission to film the operation. I believe all of them felt that it was a project worth supporting,” Lee said.

Besides acknowledging the selfless support of his family, Lee expresssed appreciation and gratitude to Utar Arts and Social Science Faculty's former dean Assoc Prof Dr Teh Chee Seng, and Utar Creative Industries Faculty dean Asst Prof Dr Carmen Nge Siew Mun, who had helped and advised him.

Back in Malaysia, Lee’s award-winning entry titled Pembedahan Implan Koklea had also won one of the top five prizes in the documentary category for the National Short Film Awards Competition Anugerah Karyawan Muda 2008 on 18 April 2009, organised by the Information, Communications and Culture Ministry in collaboration with the National Film Department (FNM) and Department of Broadcasting (RTM). Lee was selected as nominees for two awards, namely, Best Short Film Award and Best Documentary Film Award, at the 23rd Malaysia Film Festival held on 24 October 2010. His short film was also nominated for the Kuala Lumpur International Film Festival Awards and will be screened with other international films during the Kuala Lumpur International Film Festival from 24 to 28 November 2010.

UTAR Perak Campus Advertising student Lee Sheng Wang is a rising filmmaking star who got the world's attention when his three-minute educational documentary film showing the entire process of cochlear implant surgery won Silver Award at the 2010 Commonwealth Vision Awards held at the Commonwealth Club in London on 14 October 2010.

Organised jointly by the Royal Commonwealth Society and the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association, the competition aimed at encouraging creative filmmaking on developmental themes, particularly relating to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), by young, actual and prospective filmmakers in the Commonwealth. The theme for year 2010 was 'Science, Technology and Society'.

For his triumphant victory, Lee had the privilege of being flown to London, courtesy of various sponsors including MAS, FINAS and the British High Commission, to receive his award at a high-profile Commonwealth Gala Awards Ceremony attended by senior diplomats, leaders of Commonwealth organisations and media figures including the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago. During the prize-giving ceremony, Lee received a certificate and a book from Ms Gurinder Chandha OBE, one of the UK's most respected film makers with a successful track record in directing films which are international box office successes.

The competition entries were judged by a distinguished panel of judges including Chair, Keshini Navaratnam, a former BBC news anchor, Michael MacMillan, founder of Academy Award-winning Atlantis Films, Charlotte George, an independent Australian filmmaker, Jennifer Sobol, who runs creative programs at the Commonwealth Foundation, and Melanie Tankard, representing the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

On his award winning entry, Lee said he was inspired to choose cochlear implant surgery as his film topic because he wanted to send a message via the audio visual media to parents and the public that early intervention through medical processes could assist hearing-impaired children to lead a normal life.

He elaborated, "During my school days, my brother and I used to follow my mother who was doing some voluntary work with the Day Care Psychiatric and the Pediatric Ward at Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM). I learnt that many young children with impairment could be remedied with early medical intervention. However, it is regrettable that many parents are not aware of the availability of such intervention. I had since set my heart to play my part in disseminating this information and reach out to large audience."

Lee took about 24 months to complete the documentary. The editing of materials, and composing of music and voice-over took up most of the time and he had to do all these in between his studies and other commitments. Showing massive talent in filmmaking since the age of 15, Lee enthused, "I just had this keen interest to want to do a film. I did a lot of reading and research and the more I learn and explore, the higher was my interest level. Self learning was not easy and the intensity of my interest in this field was the motivating factor. I have to balance my time on hobby and my studies. In some ways, both are complementary. As I am pursuing a course in advertising at UTAR, the knowledge gained in some of the subjects is relevant to filmmaking. At the same time, my extra reading and research reinforces some of the theories in the course of my studies."

For the preparation and coordination of the filming, Lee did not face much difficulty. He said, "Our good relationship with the doctors and faculty members was critical in getting the first clearance to produce this documentary. In this regard, I would like to thank Prof. Dato' Dr. Lokman Saim, Dean and Director UKM Medical Centre, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Goh Bee See, Otorhinolaryngology Surgeon, as well as Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kartini Ahmad, Head of Department of Speech Sciences, and Prof. Dr. Siti, Head of Department of Audiology, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, UKM, who were all very supportive of this project. The parents of the patient were magnanimous and understanding in giving us the permission to film the operation. I believe all of them felt that it was a project worth supporting."

Besides acknowledging the selfless support of his family, Lee expressed, "I would like to thank Assoc. Prof. Dr Teh Chee Seng, former Dean of UTAR Faculty of Arts and Social Science, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Carmen Nge Siew Mun, Dean of UTAR Faculty of Creative Industries, who are always there to help or advise me. I would also like to acknowledge the support and sponsorship of National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS), Malaysia Airlines, and The British High Commission (Malaysia). I would like to thank my local State Assembly Representative in Subang Jaya constituency, The Ministry of Information Communications and Culture and my university, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman."

Back in Malaysia, Lee's award-winning entry titled Pembedahan Implan Koklea had also won one of the top five prizes in the documentary category for the National Short Film Awards Competition 'Anugerah Karyawan Muda 2008' on 18 April 2009, organised by the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture in collaboration with the National Film Department (FNM) and Department of Broadcasting (RTM). Furthermore, Lee was selected as nominees for two awards at the 23rd Malaysia Film Festival for Best Short Film Award and Best Documentary Film Award held on 24 October 2010. UTAR STUDENT NOMINATED FOR 2010 COMMONWEALTH VISION AWARDS

Lee Sheng Wang, a UTAR Advertising student, is up for an award from the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) in the United Kingdom and may even strike gold come October 14, 2010 when the RCS gives out the final prizes for its 2010 Young Commonwealth Competitions at a high-profile Gala Awards Ceremony in London .

The 2010 Young Commonwealth Competitions comprise three competitions namely, the 2010 Commonwealth Vision Awards, the Commonwealth Essay Competition and the Commonwealth Photographic Award covering film, writing, and photography respectively.

Lee is one of the seven prize nominees for the 2010 Commonwealth Vision Awards, a competition which accepts entrants from two age groups - Class A (age 18-30) and Class B (under 18) - for the film category.

Lee, 19, submitted a 3-minute documentary film on Cochlea Implant Surgery (English Version) for the competition designed to encourage creative filmmaking by young, actual and prospective filmmakers in the Commonwealth. His entry has made it to the final stage of the competition, pitting him against three other nominees of Class A for the top prize.

As one of the four prize nominees, he stands a chance to win the 1 st Prize of £2,000 and has been invited to make a trip to London to attend a series of workshops, meetings and the Gala Awards Ceremony which will see the attendance of senior diplomats, leaders of Commonwealth organisations and media figures.

On his nomination, Lee said, "With this nomination, I have a renewed sense of confidence I will be a Gold Award winner and to win the top prize will be an added bonus".

Lee has previously been nominated for several national awards for his filmmaking efforts. His filmmaking talent also got him chosen as one of the two Malaysians to represent the country at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) - Republic of Korea (ROK) Independent Cinema Workshop held in August 2009 in Los Baños, Laguna, the Philippines .

Keluarga Bahagia Tanpa Dadah

At the age of 15, he produced a short film titled “Keluarga Bahagia Tanpa Dadah” which was shortlisted as the Top Ten Winner in the Public Service Category in a National Competition “Anugerah Filem Pendek 2006” organized by Ministry of Information, National Film Department (FNM) and Department of Broadcasting (RTM).

His achievement is commendable as he was the youngest contestant. The production was self-learned using basic equipment and the entire production including the music was original. He handled the total production including script writing, directing, editing, and sound mixing.

Implant Cochlear Surgery De Documentary

Hearing is one of the critical senses that affect the quality of life in human beings. Statistically, four in one thousand babies are born with hearing problems that cannot be corrected using external hearing aids. However, for hearing problems that affect the inner ear, corrective surgery is available to remedy the problem.

This documentary shows how hearing in young children can be restored with implant cochlear technology. This surgery is indicated in patients with bilateral severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. Assessments can be done even on new born to determine the need for this corrective intervention.

This micro surgery process places an Implant which provides electrical stimulus that is picked up as sound waves by the brain. Implant patients will need to undergo extensive therapy and coaching on listening skills to enable them to hear. The Audiologist and Pathologist play a crucial role in managing the entire process from diagnosis to full rehabilitation.

This documentary is intended to educate the public on the availability of this technology in Malaysia. Parents of children with hearing impairment need not hope but can reasonably expect to restore the hearing abilities of their child.

The surgery was recorded live in the operating theater of Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

My Valentine’s Day

I pick Taylor Swift because she is currently single and hopefully available.

It would be nice if I could spend a day with Swift on board a luxurious yacht far away from the hectic world, enjoying romantic moments under the twinkling stars. I have always had this urge to spend time romantically on board a yacht building close relationship.

It would be nice to start the evening with a nice bottle of premium red wine followed by steamboat dinner with a good spread of fresh delicious sea food. A meal of steamboat out in the open seas is undeniably exciting and romantic in bringing a relationship closer.

The fabulous evening of wining, dining and social engagement will end with some colorful fireworks.

HP FUTURE IS EVENT

In his Welcome Speech, Danny Lee, stated HP strives to deliver beyond expectations. Certainly they did just that as the HP Future is event was a delightful experience for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the occasion: the ambiance of the place, engaging with fellow bloggers, getting a feel of the computers on display, listening to the views of the panel of speakers among others.

The choice of Rootz Club as the venue was befitting for the occasion. The rooftop was nicely landscaped giving that feel of peace with nature. The clear view of the Telekom Tower and Petronas Twin Towers at the background was picturesque and enchanting in the night sky.

The Club itself is luxuriously fitted out and provided the comfort of space. While waiting for the main event to commence, I kept myself busy exploring the features of the HP TouchSmart PC. I was amazed with the highly innovative features.

The main event was well orchestrated with the eloquence of Will Quah who emceed and chaired the Forum.

The panel members articulated their views well and in a lively manner that kept me tuned in despite my indulgence with alcohol. Kenny Sia and the absolutely charming looking ladies were able to reach out to audience with their fluency in presentation and on the subject matter. Danny Lee and Low Sin Yip matched up to the oratory skills with their Welcome and Closing speech respectively.

I like to add my vision on future trends in technology. I believe there will be a quantum leap in the future development of touch-screen technology in personal computers. The dimensions of innovation in hardware and software will render the present PC obsolete.

Overall, it was a fun and enriching evening which I cherish.
